Careers in Global Affairs

The world faces a range of challenges. From global health to environmental sustainability, the problems we face demand an interdisciplinary approach, and expertise in multiple academic disciplines. With a degree in global affairs, you will gain the intellectual tools needed to understand and address these challenges as a professional in international organizations, governmental agencies or private enterprise.

International relations scholars work with experts in other fields to solve real-world problems. Whether it’s the development of a sustainable economic model or the causes and cures of conflict, research in international affairs draws on the insights provided by fields such as political science, history, sociology, anthropology, or environmental science.

Graduate students can choose from a range of electives to tailor the program to their specific interests. In addition, students can pursue a concentration in the field of nonproliferation studies or a region of interest, such as Africa. In addition to their required courses, students can participate in a summer internship or a global fellowship to gain hands-on experience.

In the public sector, careers in global affairs focus on addressing the most complex issues facing the world. Responsibilities might include working with international partners, foreign governments or multilateral institutions like the United Nations. In the private sector, job opportunities might include those with companies involved in international business, finance, telecommunications, aerospace technology, and consulting. Students may also find positions with nonprofit organizations, such as foundations and public interest groups. Students who take a course abroad during the summer or term-time can count up to two courses toward their major requirements with DUS approval.
