The Front Page of a Website Isn’t Always About the Biggest News of the Day

The front page of a newspaper has the biggest news stories of the day in whatever country it is being circulated in, but it will also tease other important or interesting stories that are inside. Similarly, the home page of a website is usually what a user will see when they enter the site – though it may be broken out into other sections such as Local, Sports, Lifestyle, Family or Business.

For example, the cricketer Jos Buttler was elated to receive a front-page profile when he scored a century, but he would have preferred it if that story had been about him taking five wickets or something of that nature. It is not something you want as a player, and you would much rather be in the news for your performances than being caught up in a media frenzy about something that isn’t as significant as a century or five wickets.

In 2014, three Jane Does who were sex trafficked as minors sued Backpage in federal court, alleging that their traffickers used the website to post ads offering them for sex. A judge ruled that the site was engaging in traditional publisher functions with regard to third-party content, and therefore it was protected by CDA Section 230.
